Divine Will Vs Individual Will

Divine Will Vs Individual Will

As it seems to be destined for me to deal with it, this question has come-up again in discussion; i.e. Divine Will Vs Individual Will.

This time I prefer to respond in pointers as I have already written about it extensively; except where detailed explanation is necessary.

1. Why Divine is doing this or that? Or why Divine is allowing?

Answer – Divine is neither doing nor allowing, because allowing itself implies doing. Divine is not an individual; hence, traits of an individual — such as action or inaction — cannot be applied to it. Divine is Energy, Nature, Existence — pure witnessing. It neither interferes nor prevents; it simply observes the play of nature as per the inherent qualities of things.

For “Doing” anything, ego is needed. Ego wants to achieve something so it goes into doing.

Divine has no ego. Hence, there is no Divine Will to act. Divine doesn’t want to attain anything as it is already everything.

Individual has ego. Hence, there is an Individual Will to act.

2. Why destructive events happen?

Answer – Question again suggests our non-receptivity towards Tamas Guna. Again, Divine/Nature/ Existence/Energy is not doing or allowing any destructive event. It is just witnessing it happening or unfolding.

3. What is Divine Will then?

Answer – Everyone and everything following their nature is Divine Will.

4. What is Individual Will?

Answer – Individual Will arises from ego — from conditioning, desires, and the wish to attain something in life. It is the mind’s movement towards goals, shaped by circumstances and environment.

As discussed before, understanding evolution from Rocks to Rivers to Plants to Animals to Humans (https://www.astrosaxena.com/articles/CPA1) will be helpful in understanding that why destructive events happen in this world?

When we come into Human Form from last animal incarnation, largely we are at very high Tamasic Guna prominence with very little percentage of Rajas and Sattva.

So, if this person gets involved in Tamasic activities then it should not be a surprise to anyone. This is what he is supposed to do as per the Divine Will; i.e. follow the nature. He is supposed to 1st exhaust the excessive Tamasic Energy within him and then move towards Rajas and then towards balancing them through Sattva.

Now, the important part.

5. Does it mean that he is supposed to destroy himself or others? Is he supposed to commit crimes?

Answer - Not really!!! There are many ways to exhaust Tamas; i.e. Sleep, Procrastination, laziness, Drinking, Smoking, Drugs, Destruction, Yogas like Yoga Nindra, Meditation like Death Meditation.

So, he can choose any of these activities to exhaust tamas and increase % of Rajas and Sattva.

6. Then why a person, who is prominent Tamasic, is choosing Laziness and not Crime or Yoga Nindra when those options are also available?

This is where I said many times before that mind seeks the easiest option. Mind doesn’t want to break the comfort zone.

Tamas is convenient and within Tamas also, Sleep/Laziness or Procrastination is most convenient rather than destroying others or Self because for destruction also some efforts will be necessary. A 99.99% Tamasic person will not even commit suicide because for that also, he has to get up from the bed and go to market to buy the poison. Who will do this much of effort?

Again, it is not divine which is making him go through all. Divine/Nature has given all options of Tamas but out of convenience person is choosing procrastinating, sleeping, laziness.

Another way of looking at it is if Tamasic is extrovert/masculine then he may harm others or self as it requires efforts but if Tamasic is introvert/feminine, he may decide to be lazy or procrastinating.

It is better if a Tamasic person is an introvert/feminine than an extrovert/masculine. it is good if a Tamasic person is little bit timid or fearful rather than courageous. It would have been a blessing for humanity if Adolf Hitler had been a little lazy or procrastinating.

As human mind understands things only by dividing things, let’s make one further division in Gunas too, as follows –

Evolution through Gunas and Personality Balance

Guna Prominence

Personality Type

Expression / Behaviour

Evolutionary Stage / Tendency

Tamas

Inactive / Introvert / Feminine

Lazy and Procrastinating

Stagnant; needs awakening through guidance or self-awareness

Tamas

Active / Extrovert / Masculine

Destructive towards Self or Others

Misguided energy; destructive until consciousness awakens

Tamas

Balanced between Introvert–Extrovert or Feminine–Masculine or Inactive–Active

Receptive to counselling, inclined towards Yoga Nidra or Death Meditation

Ready for evolution towards Rajas

Rajas

Inactive / Introvert / Feminine

Desires success but lacks sufficient effort or puts efforts in wrong direction.

Misaligned drive; learning to balance desire and action

Rajas

Active / Extrovert / Masculine

Over-indulgent, greedy, power-driven (e.g., politicians, materialists)

Needs discernment; eventually tires of excess

Rajas

Balanced between Introvert–Extrovert or Feminine–Masculine or Inactive–Active

Acts for success yet knows when to stop

Ready for evolution towards Sattva

Sattva

Inactive / Introvert / Feminine

Anonymous Guru; avoids fame and lives incognito

Highly evolved; operates silently

Sattva

Active / Extrovert / Masculine

Guru or Master reaching out to help maximum people

Enlightened and compassionate outreach

Sattva

Balanced between Introvert–Extrovert or Feminine–Masculine or Inactive–Active

Guru who reaches masses wisely and filters unnecessary crowd

Perfect balance; operates from complete awareness

Beyond these 3 Gunas is Nirguna State; i.e. all enlightened masters.

Thus, every Guna expresses itself in multiple shades, and each shade offers a doorway towards balance and evolution.

At the Nirguna State, everything is seen as Divine Will. One realizes that whatever occurred across all lifetimes, through every Guna, was also Divine Will — a necessary unfolding for learning and growth. Not a single blade of grass is wrongly placed in this cosmos.

But again, this is a realization which takes place after reaching Nirguna State and never before it. Before that, we will continue to raise this question of Divine Will Vs Individual Will.

Finally, Divine Will is only known after becoming Divine. Before that, everything is individual will. Divine Will is for people like Osho who gladly accept Garlands and Hand-cuffs both as Divine Will. It is not for people like us. So again, only an awakened person should talk about Divine Will.
